2 Sides of Detroit is a motion based project created with elements of stop-motion animation. The objective of this project was to create a series of two posters that complement one another (in message and design) and communicate the concept using motion to emphasize the main idea. I wanted to study the 2 sides of Detroit: the neighborhoods and downtown and focus on the differences between the way the two are treated. The neighborhoods often get neglected in comparison to the bustling downtown with its new skyscrapers and refurbishments.
The struggle for this project was to not cast a bad light on the city of Detroit and its growth over the years, but to call attention to the more neglected, overlooked parts of the city. I chose to do this by using stop motion to create an interesting build-up / crumbling effect to showcase the rebirth of Detroit, but also the ongoing decay that remains. By showcasing the two halves of different buildings coming together as one the posters became connected. This project reminded me that everything is not black and white and to consider the duality of a problem.
